During some recent travels I had the opportunity to share some thoughts with someone who was disastrously uninformed about poverty level thresholds. In this case, the other person was surprised to learn that poverty for a single person is not $45K like they thought it was. It is amazing to me how our reference points change based on our own situations. This particular individual would most definitely be in the higher income and wealth bracket and so its no surprise that “poor” and poverty to them was half way to the 6-figure mark. This discussion drove me to create the above graph and share this information.
